Delivering full motion video (FMV) image processing for real-time situational awareness and actionable intelligence with reduced manpower requirements

Vienna, Va., August 30, 2010 – Speaking recently on the subject of ISR data, Lt. Gen. David A. Deptula, Air Force Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance recently stated “We’re going to find ourselves in the not too distant future swimming in sensors and drowning in data. Developing the technology and tools to make this easier, faster and less manpower intensive is going to be vital as warfare in the information age matures1”.

Addressing this challenge, Merlin International, the leading IT solutions provider to the U.S. Federal Government and MotionDSP, an industry leader in advanced image processing, today announced they have partnered to provide a combat-proven solution that can dramatically improve full motion video from existing imaging payloads.

Intelligence analysts, warfighters, and automated analytics tools can now benefit from real-time image stabilization, noise reduction, increased resolution, reduction of atmospheric haze, and deblurring on both EO and IR FMV, deployed on COTS PC hardware, and easily integrated into existing video systems.

“Defense and intelligence agencies worldwide rely on Merlin, and partners like MotionDSP, to deliver innovative, operational and proven Collaborative Video Delivery solutions that encompass FMV, providing a level of visual clarity that has never been possible before. Merlin brings a complete end-to-end framework for supporting FMV capabilities for intelligence analysts, warfighters and commanders to receive and access new levels of battlefield intelligence, resulting in increased situational awareness.” said John Trauth, President, Merlin International.

“Every month the DoD streams tens of thousands of hours of live video. The military is becoming increasingly reliant on this video to extract crucial intelligence and turn it into actionable data.” said Sean Varah, CEO, Motion DSP. “This video frequently suffers from quality issues like low resolution, shake, and noise that obscure forensically-valuable details or information. Ikena ISR’s real-time FMV image processing dramatically reduces the time required to get situational awareness information into the hands of warfighters, as well as improving the performance of existing automated analysis tools such as facial recognition, targeting, and video analytics.”

Motion DSP works closely with NVIDIA to uniquely enable its Ikena ISR software to deliver real-time image processing of surveillance footage through its use of graphics processing units (GPUs). NVIDIA GPUs are massively parallel processors, found in PCs and laptops, that enable complex computing problems to be split into thousands of pieces and processed simultaneously, making them the ideal choice for real-time image processing in the field. NVIDIA Tesla C2050 GPUs allow MotionDSP to deliver real-time video processing for 720P and 1080P HD formats in easy-to-deploy, off-the-shelf solutions. See Ikena ISR running on NVIDIA’s latest “Fermi” GPU architecture on NVIDIA’s website.

MotionDSP has been approved as an authorized vendor on Merlin’s NASA SEWP IV contract. SEWP IV Contract: NNG07DA23B.
